Gel nails are beautifully glossy, available in a million colours, and they last for weeks. If you want a natural look paired with brilliant colour, gel nails are the way to go.

Shellac is the original brand name of the gel nail polish compound. So, if you're ever confused (we certainly were) about whether or not to get Shellac or gel, just be assured that they're the same thing.

Be sure to give your nails a break every now and then between gel manicures. Getting too many in a row can damage your natural nails. You'll also need to go back to the salon to get them removed. Chlorine swimming pools or exposing your nails to other chemicals might shorten how long the gel polish lasts.

You'll want to get your gels either replaced or removed after about two weeks, as your nails grow out.

Gel extensions are a fake nail that is made from the same chemical compound as gel nail polish. They're attached to the natural nail and cured under a UV light to add extra length and your choice of shape.

Gel extensiond are made from the gel itself and attach to the nail via gel adhesive that is cured under a UV light. If you get an acrylic set, you're opting for a plastic nail extension that is glued down and has an acrylic mixture applied on top.
